Ways To Give
McHenry County and Barrington Duck Races and Pool Parties
A free family event!
Ready! Set! QUACK! Join us in celebrating 19 years of duck to duck competition in the annual McHenry County and Barrington Duck Races and Pool Parties this summer. Adopt a duck (or several), watch them race down the slides and may the best duck win!
Swimming, food and games will also be available for everyone. The events benefit HPNI’s Care for Children Fund, which supports the pediatric hospice and palliative care programs.
Many families of HPNI’s youngest patients have either exhausted their medical insurance or have no medical coverage at all, which is why your support is so critical. Last year, HPNI covered almost $1.2 million for care services provided to children because of the community’s generosity.

FAQs—
What’s a Duck Race?
Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois (HPNI) organizes these annual events as fun and casual wayss to raise funds for its children’s hospice and palliative care program. At the HPNI Duck Races, hundreds of colorful little plastic ducks careen down big water slides at local pools to the waiting arms of race officials who pluck the winning quackers out of the water. As a fund-raising event, participants have a chance to win prizes by “adopting” (purchasing) ducks with the hope that they win in any of the several races. The ducks are numbered and winners announced after the races.
What is the children’s care program?
All proceeds from both Duck Races will help our young patients with serious and life limiting illness receive the supportive care they need, when their families are unable to pay for the services. HPNI has the largest pediatric hospice and palliative care program in Illinois, called Hope’s Friends. Last year, the agency covered $1.2 million for non-reimbursed care services provided to our pediatric population. The majority of our young patients have no medical coverage or have depleted their coverage by the time they need hospice and palliative care services.

How do my ducks get into the race?
The ducks are pre-numbered before the race. Every duck “adoption,” whether done online, by mail, or at a Duck Race event , is entered into our Duck database with information about the purchaser and the duck’s number. Prior to the race, the numbered ducks are shuffled into different heats (races). For example, if you adopt six ducks, your ducks will be placed in random races. The winning ducks are picked out of the water at the finish line and given to race officials. Reports are generated matching the winning duck number to the purchaser. Prize pick-up occurs shortly after each race.
