"I have been involved with
HPNI since 2000.
I am a patient volunteer,
but I have also done vigils.
People sometimes ask me
how I can do this,
but it has never been
a scary thing for me.
It's very fulfilling."

Volunteer Helen Moore

This summer, Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois will open the doors
to the new Pepper Family Hospice Home and Center for Care, in Barrington, Illinois.

Located just off of Rt.14 in downtown Barrington, this center will include a 16-room inpatient unit, providing end-of-life care and support. It will also include the Center for Care which will provide palliative care, grief support services, as well as numerous complementary therapies and educational opportunities for families and community
members.

New volunteer opportunities for anyone interested in providing end-of-life care are available.

Patient Care Volunteers –These volunteers provide non-medical support to our
families and staff in the inpatient unit. Duties could include: bedside reading to patients, sitting with children in the family room, and providing comfort, respite and support to families of dying patients, office and administrative support to the nursing staff. These volunteers receive 16 hours of training in end-of-life care.

Family Care Concierge-These volunteers work exclusively with families who are visiting with loved ones at the new Hospice Home. They provide help, information and guidance to families whose loved one is in the unit, covering everyday issues including child care, transportation and where to stay nearby and even where to get a good cup of coffee as well as more complex support on issues like funeral planning.

Teen Volunteers-Always an important part of our volunteer staff, interested teens are encouraged to apply at Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois to support our new efforts to provide each patient and family with a personalized end-of-life remembrance. Our Teen staff will work with families to digitize pictures for family reminiscences and provide digital documentation for use at funeral services and memorials.

College Age and Night Owls-Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois has an ongoing staff of volunteers to sit with our patients who are in danger of dying alone. We are looking to expand this program to provide “Compassionate Care Companions” who will sit with patients, to provide a compassionate presence in the overnight hours.

Agency Support Volunteers-Volunteers in any business or social service field who are willing to give of their time and talent are welcome at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois. Currently, we have volunteer staff working with our Human Resource recruiters, in our Accounting and Finance departments, with our Foundation staff, and in Marketing and Communications. Our Home will be open 24 hours a day and our needs are constant. Your talents in patient care, technology, listening, problem solving, or kindness are all welcome and very appreciated.  Please call for more information or to volunteer today.

Call Janice Farrell, volunteer coordinator, at 224-770-2477.
