Now Open:
The Pepper Family Hospice Home and Center for Care

Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois recently opened The Pepper Family Hospice Home and Center for Care, a 16-bed inpatient facility, in Barrington, making it the third in the state of Illinois and among the first "Green" hospices in the country. Beautifully designed with homelike features by renowned hospice architects, and built by Pepper Construction Company, the facility includes:

  • private terraces for each patient room, and space within each room for family members to stay with the patient,
  • a family room with children’s play area
  • gathering kitchen,
  • family dining area,
  • meditation room,
  • clinical offices,
  • the agency’s Center for Loss and Hope bereavement offices, and
  • the agency’s operational headquarters.

Situated on 6.7 partially wooded acres, the building is surrounded by gardens—including specially designed healing gardens, walking paths and a retention pond—and is adjacent to an expansive park area.

The name of the facility recognizes the Pepper Family of Barrington who became the lead donors of the campaign with a $3 million contribution.

Since the total project cost carries a price tag of $18.5 million, the capital campaign will continue until the goal is met, reaching out to the communities that are served by the agency.

Your Opportunity to Help us GrowUSGBC LEED. The new inpatient facility will be constructed in line with the guidelines for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) "Green Building" Rating System. LEED-certified buildings cost less to operate and maintain, are energy- and water-efficient, are healthier and safer for occupants, and use resources more effectively. The Hospice Home project is targeting a silver rating for the design and construction. To obtain the silver rating under the LEED system, HNI’s architects not only designed the building to be energy efficient, but took extra efforts such as ensuring that it will feature a high percentage of natural lighting, that native plants will be used throughout the landscaping and as few trees removed as possible on the property.
