Why inpatient care?

The need for an inpatient unit stems from the reality that not all terminal patients’ symptoms can be managed at home.

Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois is committed to reaching every person who can benefit from hospice care. An inpatient unit allows us to extend that commitment to patients who need an alternative care setting. Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois worked closely with Centegra Health System to design and build a first-rate unit in McHenry County--the first of its kind in the county. In addition, the agency has constructed a second unit--The Pepper Family Hospice Home and Center for Care, an $18.5 million free-standing 16-bed inpatient facility in Barrington, Illinois. Opening is planned for the summer of 2010.

What is in the Woodstock Inpatient facility?

The facility houses seven patient rooms, a family room, private meeting and reflection space, kitchen and a welcome area. The décor includes warm wood tones, soft fabrics and lighting, a sculptured water wall and many other finishes and artwork that create a milieu of safety, comfort and peace.

What’s unique about this Woodstock Hospice inpatient care?

Hospice’s inpatient unit is designed to manage acute symptoms and ease the burden that families experience while caring for a loved one with a terminal illness. In addition, the unit increases opportunities for patients and families to come together. It is truly an important new hospice choice.

A multidisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, massage/art/music therapists and professionally trained volunteers surround the patient and the family with an exceptional level of support and care. Patients receive continuous skilled 24-hour care that focuses on pain and symptom management.

A Place of Transition

The ultimate goal of the Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois inpatient unit is to act as a place of transition, to stabilize the patients and to enable them to return to a home or nursing home environment. This short-term care facility provides assistance and support for patients and their families when treatment of symptoms would be optimized beyond the community setting. What is the Criteria for Inpatient Care?

The inpatient unit is for those who:

  • Are currently in a hospital, nursing home or assisted living facility and require general inpatient unit level of care;
  • Are currently being cared for at home but require more intensive nursing care and symptom management;
Life is better when people care.
