Integrative Therapies
“Dana was special to Len. She knew how to help him with massage therapy. It relieved him of his pain so he could rest comfortably—at least for a while.”
– An ALS patient’s wife
What is integrative therapy?
At Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois, we care for body, mind and spirit providing the best in medical care and integrating special therapies to care for the whole person. Our integrative and creative therapists use musical instruments, art, their voice, their hearts and their hands to expand the way we care for our patients–to enhance quality of life, reduce pain and provide comfort and relaxation. Special group programs are offered to all residents at our partnering senior communities.
Music Therapy
A music therapist uses all aspects of music in working with a person’s emotional, cognitive, physical, social and spiritual being. The skillful use of music can potentially increase limited communication, socialization and relaxation, and decrease pain, stress and anxiety. Music therapy can provide an innovating and relaxing opportunity for life review and reminiscence through music and song. Whether listening to favorite melodies, singing familiar songs, or composing something new, music therapy often can delight and inspire patients and their families, and allows for the expression of emotions that might not otherwise be possible.
Massage Therapy/Reiki/Touch Therapies
Massage therapy is skilled, systematic touch applied with sensitivity and compassion by professionally trained therapists. The intention is to increase comfort, complement medical treatment and support the individual both physically and emotionally. A variety of “touch” therapies are available based on a patient’s needs and preferences. Designed to promote circulation, reduce pain, lower stress and promote a sense of deep relaxation, all touch therapies are customized to a patient’s level of comfort and care. Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois offers specialized training to its patient care volunteers to provide light touch therapy and hand therapy to patients during visits.
Art Therapy
Used in both individual and group settings, art therapy uses the creative process of art making to enhance the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of people of all ages. No artistic skills are necessary to participate in this form of self-expression that can help reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness and achieve insight. In the hospice setting, art therapy can aid symptom management, provide a means to communicate, explore spiritual concerns, and serve to support friends and family members in fun and creative ways.
“Creating the pencil sketches makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something new and exciting during the day.”
–Helen, a hospice patient
Guided Visualization
Guided Visualization or guided imagery is a relaxation technique in which words, sounds, etc., are used to evoke positive mental images, feelings, and thoughts. By introducing breath awareness and the practice of mindfulness through a form of guided meditation, a sense of calm and peaceful relaxation is often achieved.
