What Is Inpatient Care?
Inpatient Care is one of four levels of care provided to patients by Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois. The goal of this level of care is to manage symptoms needing constant intervention in an inpatient setting and assisting patients to return to wherever they call home.

The seven room Hospice Home in Woodstock features flatscreen TVs, DVD players and enhanced lighting.
Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois provides inpatient care in its two inpatient units—one in the freestanding Pepper Family Hospice Home and Center for Care in Barrington, and the other within the Centegra Specialty Hospital in Woodstock. We are here when end-of-life issues seem insurmountable for various reasons, including the inability to control pain or other symptoms, including shortness of breath, nausea, and anxiety, when the patient’s caregivers or home-care setting requires change and new arrangements need to be made, and when care education is needed for a patient’s changing condition due to their disease process. Because of the home-like atmosphere and amenities, we want patients and their families to think of our inpatient units as their home away from home.
Services provided by our professional staff include:
- 24-hour medical and nursing care
- psychological/social counseling and assistance
- spiritual counseling and religious services of your choice
- complementary therapies including art, music, massage and Reiki
- medication monitoring and assistance
- personal care assistance
- grief support

The patient suites in the Barrington IPU feature expansive space for family and friends to comfortably stay with patients.
These units are professional, compassionate places where patients receive an acute-level of care 24 hours a day while symptoms are stabilized. Our clinical team provides care in a home-like atmosphere giving families the freedom from worry about managing the care on their own so they can focus on their loved one. Unlike clinical institutions, here, there are no overhead pages, no alarms, no harsh lights. Staff wear regular clothing, not uniforms. Patient rooms are spacious and nicely decorated like a bedroom at home. Visitors can come and go as they need to, as there are no set visiting hours. Many of our patient rooms accommodate a wide bed so family members can lie with them.
Patients are admitted to the Inpatient Unit on a temporary basis. Patients are evaluated daily to determine if their symptoms are managed, at which time they transfer back to wherever they call home.
