Care For Children

Working Together To Take Care Of Children With Serious Illnesses

We are grateful for the professional partnerships we hold with the following organizations in the care of our pediatric patients. Together, we bring the best possible care and support to our young patients and their families.

  • Lutheran General Children’s Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois
  • Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois
  • Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois
  • Loyola Medical Center, Maywood, Illinois
  • University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois
  • Marklund Children’s Home, Bloomingdale, Illinois***

***In 2009, HPNI developed a special pilot program with Marklund Children’s Home in Bloomingdale, Illinois to provide palliative care to children living full time in a residential facility. The pilot project called, Hope’s Circle of Friends, provides care to the young patients, in addition to education for the Marklund staff on pediatric palliative care, support to staff through each child’s journey, including grief support, and facilitation of family group meetings. Hope’s Friends staff will document research on findings and present to clinical organizations at the regional and national levels. The program was funded by grants from the Oberweiler Foundation and the Fred and Jean Allegretti Foundation, of Barrington, Illinois.

Training Future Pediatricians and Advance Practice Nurses

Hospice & Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois recently began serving as a clinical site for Lutheran General Hospital’s residency program, the first of its kind on the country. Within this program, pediatric residents are required (by Lutheran General) to complete a rotation with HPNI’s pediatric palliative care program. Over nine months, 12 residents will take part in a six-week rotation of HPNI’s pediatric program, with two or three in the program at one time.

In addition, HPNI is collaborating with the University of Illinois Chicago to provide a pediatric palliative care rotation for Advance Practice Nurses (APNs) for students working toward their masters degrees in pediatric palliative care.
